The SANDRA LONG COLLECTION of rare and beautiful ebony furniture is absolutely exceptional.
Ebony (diospyros ebenum or Ceylon ebony) is the aristocrat of hardwoods and native to southern India and Sri Lanka. It has long been prized for its dense hardness, which lends itself to exquisite carving and a smooth finish when polished. Ebony has been a luxury wood since ancient times and was so popular in 16th century Paris, that the French term for cabinentmaker is still ébénistes. The COLLECTION has a number pieces with the signature “shell” pattern that signifies that it is of Ceylonese “Burgher” or Dutch colonial origin.
The COLLECTION has a rich representation of tropical hardwoods such as rare calamander, nadoon, satinwood, jackwood and tamarind, as well as rosewood, mahogany and teak. These woods stand alone for the color and grain, or are often combined to brilliant effect.
